The SBD plane was redesigned from the A-17. The plane was eventually produced by the Douglas Company who took over the Northrop Company. The Northrop Company was working on an update of the design. By 1940's, the plane was widely used by the Navy in there carrier fleet. These planes played a major role in the Battle of Midway. The planes launched from the Enterprise, Hornet, and Yorktown carriers to sink the Japanese carriers Akagi, Kaga and Soryu.
