| Photo taken from the roof of one of the near-by wards shows the main building of Laugarness Hospital completely enveloped in a blazing inferno. Although the wards pictured are less than 100 feet from the fire, they escaped the same fate. Due to the marvelous control of the Icelandic and Army firemen, all patients of the hospital were evacuated safely in fifteen minutes. Icelandic and Army firemen fought the blaze for hours to no avail. The wooden structure of Laugarness Hospital was leveled in four hours. |
