This twin engined bomber is one of the Marine Corps' first Mitchell medium bombing squadron, (The Flying Nightmares) which recently started operations in the South Pacific. It was one of 9 planes of the "Nightmares" squadron which participated in the initial raid on Jap installations near Rabaul, March 15, 1944. All nine planes returned. This photo was made as the Marine bombers approached New Britain Island, location of the big Jap base of Tabaul.
