FIRST TO LAND - This tiny Marine Corps observation plane was the first to land on Motoyama Airfield number one on Iwo Jima. As the wheels touched the clay runway, the Japs lobbed three mortar shells in salutation, all misses. A Third Division Marine riding the strut, guides the pilot to a parking space out of range of guns on the nearby mountains.
